Reflections from our Bookshelf: The Hero Code

The Hero Code
By: Admiral William H. McRaven (Retired)
Reflection by: Rob Coleman

Why I read it?

I had previously read Admiral McRaven’s book Make your Bed and it resonated with me, so I wanted to learn more about his perspective from his new book, The Hero Code.

What is it all about?

Many regard Admiral McRaven as a hero for his time in the Navy Seals. He wrote this book highlighting the qualities of heroes he has met over the years, many of whom were not on the battlefield. Instead, they were in hospitals, on college campuses, and in everyday life. Unlike most people’s childhood vision of superheroes, none of the heroes wore capes or had any superpowers, but all of these heroes had qualities that helped others, made a difference, and saved the world.

What caused me to pause?

The Hero Code is a lesson of virtues. It lays out the foundations of one’s character needed to live a life of honor and respect. McRaven points out that these virtues and strengths of character are learned traits. One must stay focused on these principals and hold oneself to that standard. The message of this book made me reflect on how my habits affect my life.
